Riding Boots with Front Zip or Back Zip

Before buying riding boots it is important to understand which type of boot construction you are looking for.

Modern riding boots with zippers are generally produced in three main variations:

• back zipper

• front zipper (Polo style)

• inside-front zipper

Each of these constructions has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Back zipper boots

A zipper at the back follows the natural line of the leg very nicely.
For that reason many riders prefer the appearance of this design.

However, this is also the most vulnerable position for a zipper.

The reinforcement of the heel counter is interrupted by the zipper.
As a result the foot often receives less support inside the boot.

Front zipper boots

Boots with a zipper at the front generally provide more structural support.

Because the back of the boot shaft remains closed, the boot can be constructed more firmly.

For riders with strong calves or heavier ankles, this type of boot can often be a better solution.

Stress on the zipper

A rear zipper often has to handle a much heavier load when the boot is put on.

The foot must slide deep into the shaft while the zipper is being closed.

If the foot has to be forced inward, the zipper will be under considerable pressure.
In very slim boots the zipper may therefore get stuck around 15–20 cm height.

Elastic inserts in the shaft

Many riding boots include elastic panels in the shaft.

These help compensate for small differences in calf size.
However the elastic should never be under constant full tension, because the material may eventually tear.
